While I began reading erotica when I started reading fan fiction online as a teenager, I won’t be including those in this post. While fan fiction is fun and I don’t mean to belittle it, I can’t remember the names of the first ones I read or their authors – they were Harry Potter based mostly and read on sites like FanFiction.net and AdultFanFiction.net.
My First Porn
The first time I watched a porn movie was when my family went on vacation to Gatlinburg. I had a room in the cabin to myself and the tv had all the movie channels. I fell asleep watching the anime scifi Akira and woke up to porn in the middle of the night.
The porn’s plot was based on The Crucible. The witches had a lesbian orgy. The inquisitor was fucking all the people he was trying to get a confession from. I don’t think I saw the ending or at least I don’t remember. My wrist hurt by that point and I fell asleep.
To this day I cannot find this damn porn so if you know what it is called and a link to it, I will fucking buy it for nostalgia sake.
My First Erotica
In high school a friend of mine slipped a book under the table to me in the middle of a particularly boring AP US History class. It was one she’d picked up at a thrift store that apparently had no issue selling risque content to minors. I was thus introduced to the world of erotic novels.
Wolf Tales by Kate Douglas was my first erotic romance novel series. Its all about some werewolves and the couplings are bisexual and interracial. I have many fond memories of those books. Sadly, I didn’t finish the very long series – on my bucket list.
They were Road Openers
After that movie and book, the world opened up for me. Erotica and porn were just as formative as friends, major life events, and family. I learned about my own sexuality and gender through erotica (demisexual, nonbinary for those wondering). I learned that my interests and feelings were not bad or immoral. That I was not alone and that there were other people in the world like me.
Reading and watching erotica also opened the door to writing it. Writing erotica helped save us on bills when money was tight. It also gave me the confidence I needed to write in other genres like horror.
